How to Resign From Your Job via Email

How to Resign From Your Job via EmailHow to Resign From Your Job via EmailTheresa right way and a wrong waytoquit your job and generally, resigning over emaille is the wrong way. Think of it this way If you were the boss, would you want people to send in their notlageice electronically, or would you prefer tohave an in-person conversation? When possible, its always best to quit in person. A face-to-face conversation shows courtesy to your soon-to-be-former employer and strengthens the relationship as you close this chapter in your career. You never know when you might need anetworkingcontact, arecommendation, or aletter of reference. Your manager is far mora like to help you out if you conducted your last days at the office with grace and peak professionalism. That said, there are circumstances under which quitting in person is impossible. When these situations arise, quitting by email might be necessary and the only option. When Is It Acceptable to Quit Your Job via Email? When you work remotely.If your manager is in California, and youre in Texas, and you telecommute full-time, it makes sense to resign via email. In this case, email is likely one of the ways in which you communicate with your boss most often, so its not as abrupt as it would be if you worked together in a physical office.When resigning in person would put you in danger.If you work for an abusive manager or in a psychologically unsafe environment, resigning via email may be your safest option. Youre sacrificing nothing by severing the connection, because its unlikely that your boss would provide you with a recommendation anyway. Most importantly, youre protecting yourself, which comes before career considerations. Tips for Sending an Email to Quit a Job Even if you do quit your job via email, givingtwo weeks noticeis standard practice. However, if going into the office isnt feasible, you may not be able to provide standard notice. Give as much notice as you can in order to maintain a good relationship with your employer. Do not feel like you need to provide details in your letter about why you are quitting. This is also not the space to complain about the company or co-workers. Keep your email brief and include only essential details, since a printout of this letter will likely in your employee file, and may be reviewed if you ever ask the company for a reference. Whom to Notify Your emailedresignation lettershould be sent to your immediate supervisor, with a copy to the Human Resources department at your workplace. Copy your personal email address on the message (cc or bcc) so you have the email in your records. What to Include in Your Email Message When you quit a job using email, there is information you will need to include in your email message The date your resignation is effective.What the company should do with your final paycheck, if its not direct deposited and you are not returning to work.Any questions you may have regarding compensation and benefits.How the company can contact you, if necessary. You can also include a polite thank you to the company and/or your manager. Make the subject line to your email Resignation - Your Name. Using this straightforward subject line will ensure that your manager doesnt overlook this important piece of correspondence. Resignation Email Template Subject LineResignation - Your Name First Paragraph Your email message should state that you are resigning and include the date when your resignation is effective. Middle Paragraph The next (optional) section of your resignation email message should thank your employer for the opportunities you have had during your employment with the company. Final Paragraph Conclude your resignation email message (also optional) by offering to assist with the transition. Closing Respectfully yours, Your Name Resignation Email Message Sample Email Subject Line Resignation - Anna LeonardDear Mr. CollinsMy apologies for notifying you by email, however, circ umstances are such that I will no longer be able to come into the office. Please accept this email message as notification that I am leaving my position with CDF effective January 1 due to personal reasons.I appreciate the opportunities I have been given at the company and your professional guidance and support. I wish both you and the company much success in the future.Please let me know what to expect as far as my accrued personal leave time and my final paycheck.If I can be of assistance during this transition, please let me know.Best regards,Anna Leonard Expand

Amazons pro-dog strategy puts other companies to shame

Amazons pro-dog strategy puts other companies to shameAmazons pro-dog strategy puts other companies to shameAmazon, while its building the future, is making the present very friendly for dog owners. There are reportedly4,000 dogs registered at Amazons Seattle headquarters- 500 report to work with their owners every day, on average, according to Yahoo Finance.The publication also reported thatamong other amenities, a 1,000 square-foot dog park opened in April next toThe Spheres.But pets are only allowed among 7% of employers, according to the SHRM 2016 Employee Benefits research report, which surveyed 3,490 HR workers and looked at more than 300 benefits. That number was 8% in 2015 and 4% in 2014.But Amazon is going a little broader, offering use of its enormous dog park even to neighbors and the public in Seattle.Dog-filled days at AmazonOne Twitter user - who apparently works at Microsoft - posted a photoat The Sphereswith his dog.Another Twitter user even tweeted a video of dogs in action at The Spheres.A Pembroke Welsh Corgi named Waffles with a passion for tennis balls. An American Labrador retriever named Bailey who enjoys morning snuggles. A Lab named Lucy who loves grabbing the newspaper.These are some of the dogs of Amazon featured on the companys website.Rufus, the groundbreaking dogSo how did Amazon get here? It all comes down to a four-legged companion named Rufus, who got the ball rolling on dog culture at the company.A post on Amazons website details what he did before he passed away in 2009.During his tenure, Rufus could be found strolling our hallways, sitting in on meetings (he loved a meeting), or catching a few zs in his crate. He was a master of the hallway tennis ball chase, and had everyone snookered into giving him too many treats, the post says.The dog has been called Amazons shortest volunteer worker, andAmazons former editor-in-chief and principal engineer were his owners.Amazon pups are one of the highlights of a good social media fe ed, with a few on Instagram handsomely posed in front of the Spheres.The company even profiles employees dogs, with their favorite toys and things they love.Wait, but what if you cant work with dogs?But it seems like the dogscant just zulauf wild at Amazon.JP Mangalindan, a senior correspondent for Yahoo Finance went to see the dog park and talked about how dogs are expected to act at Amazon in a video. He said the animalscant make a lot a of noise, that workers with allergies can probably have a seating arrangement that gives them some distance from the dogs, and that theres like an unofficial chief canine officer who he didnt get to meet.But not everyone is a fan of the companys approach to dogs, which in some cases are treated better than humans.But a2015 blog postby former employee Corina Zappia- who is allergic to dogs titled I Was an Amazon Chew Toy painted a different picture of what its like at Amazon in Seattlefor people who are allergic to dogs.The company did grant my req uest for a dog-free room?- ?the only windowless office on my floor, and unfortunately, four more poor Level 4s were picked to share the room with me. In lieu of windows, the L-shaped room had wipe boards spanning two of the walls, plus a quote painted in crimson from Dr. Seuss Oh the Places You Will Go. Seuss was misspelled. (Suess.) Short of the bookshelves crammed with textbooks and tech manuals we were promoting that year, we had given up on decorating, Zappia wrote.She later wrote thatshe signed a 2-year contract at the beginning of her time at Amazon, and would owe them her pre-tax bonus if she left before time was up, so she stuck it out for as long as possible, adding that, when I left six months later, it was not because of the dogs, but for the lack of work-life balance that the dogs were meant to titelseite up.Benefits of having a pet at work, for animal loversBut having a pet at work could be an advantage, if youre able to be around them for long periods of time.Dr. Ann B erger, a physician and researcher at the NIH Clinical Center who aids patients with with sometimes fatal conditions, commented on how dogs can help patients in a 2009 NIH News in Health article.You can see the difference it makes in so many of these patients when the dog is at their bedsideOur patients are often here for a long period of time. I think the dogs add a bit of normalcy to a very difficult situation. The dog will sit calmly, and the patients dont have to talk to anyone. They can just pet. I think this helps with some of the suffering, Berger said.Having a pet around might make you feel better.A 2009 article in Veterinary Clinics of North America Small Animal Practice, said that pet ownership, or just being in the presence of a companion animal, is associated with health benefits, including improvements in mental, social, and physiologic health status.Dogs arent allowed in every office, but for those who can work with them and have the option tobring them in, they can pro vide much-needed support throughout the day.

Four Factors That Drive Up Performance in Leaders and Employees

Four Factors That Drive Up Performance in Leaders and EmployeesFour Factors That Drive Up Performance in Leaders and EmployeesWhat differentiates extraordinary performers from everyone else goes deeper than simply better performance. Its a shock to some people to learn that high-performance factors seldom have to do with superior talents or skills, and have much more to do with the simple act of making choices. Its about being focused and working with the behuf of creating results that benefit the stakeholders in any given situation, creating value through accomplishments. There are four main factors that set extraordinary employees- and leaders- apart. Courage to Think Outside the Box This may seem incredibly counter-intuitive, but top performers are the ones who seem to act bravely, making choices that others dont make. They try things without knowing whether or not theyll work. They often refuse to play it safe. It takes a willingness to let go of what used to work what has al ways worked and everything that made you successful up to this point. It means acting with an attitude that says, I dont know what works, but lets find out. Mark Twain once said, I knew a man who picked a cat up by the tail. He learned 40 percent more about cats than the man who didnt. Sometimes we have to pick the cat up by the tail. You may get scratched up, but youll gain information that will set you on the right path to success. Relentless Improvement Tiger Woods was the top professional golfer when this piece was written. He was at the top of his game, and was touted as one of the best of all time. Now, consider this Tiger Woods had a coach. That fact alone should be enough to make the point that you should never consider yourself to be as good as youre going to be. Inside every top performer is a better performer waiting to get out. Tiger Woods wanted to become a better golfer, so he hired a coach. Every company gives lip service to the idea of constant improvement. Every company will agree that to stay competitive they must be better tomorrow than they are today. Many people will not rise to this expectation so when someone does, they stand out. For top performing individuals, relentless improvement is part of what they do every day. We all constantly talk about thinking outside the box. Thats fine, and you most certainly should think outside the box. But another approach is to first reimagine the box youre already in, making it better. There is nothing wrong with returning to and mastering the basics before demanding more from yourself or your organization. Always Planning for the Unexpected Leaders thrive on the unexpected. Its the essence of grace to perform well when under pressure. They research, forecast, and consider every contingency. These individuals are completely at ease with the reality that something totally unexpected will happen. This is the key to moving forward versus being frozen with uncertainty, embracing the unknown. It us ed to be that the way to succeed was to make the right choice. To succeed today means making the right choice and then making the next right choice quickly enough. Regardless of whats going on in your world right now, get ready to switch gears. You may think you understand the situation, but the situation is in a state of constant flux. Top performers accept that stuff happens. You must always factor in that however carefully you plan your work and work your plan, the unexpected will inevitably rear its ugly head and throw a wrench into your carefully constructed scenario. The beginning step in creating opportunity from change is to always expect the change. Whatever happens may not be what you wanted, but it truly is normal. Respond accordingly. Aspire to Show Off Showing off, despite the negative connotations, can sometimes be a good thing. Showing off is a mindset. The true show-offs in any organization are often the quiet ones. It does not mean being boisterous about achieve ments, but being unafraid to tout what youve accomplished. Theyre the ones that perform with consistency and even a certain sense of style. Theyre like the old saying about the duck Above the surface, be calm and elegant. Below the surface, paddle like crazy. The Bottom Line When I ask executives and managers to rate desired attributes in employees, almost invariably consistency of performance, performing under pressure, and delivering results are the top three. Its about choosing how we come to each and every situation, challenge, and opportunity in our work and in our lives. How to Involve Your Family in Your Job Search

How to Involve Your Family in Your Job SearchHow to Involve Your Family in Your Job SearchAs your family witnesses all of the blood, sweat, and tears that go into a job hunt, theyre bound to be curious how your efforts are paying off and if they might be able to help. Heres how to involve your family in this important chapter of your life with these ideas for age-appropriate involvement.How to Involve Your Family in Your Job SearchNetworkingOne of the best reasons to involve your personal network is that they can help get the word out that youre looking for opportunities. You never know who their six degrees of Kevin Bacon is who may have the keys to your dream job, says Victoria Sawtelle, community manager for Zety.Take your sister up on the offer to introduce you to her neighbor who shes koranvers does something related to your industry. Ask your significant other to comb her LinkedIn connections for promising leads. Just be sure your partner, older children, and other relatives kn ow what it is that you seek.A common problem I see job seekers experiencing is that they work so hard to identify people who could help them in their search that when the inevitable question arises, What are you looking for?, they arent ready with a clear answer, says Corey McLellan, executive director of the Career and Connection Institute at Gordon College. Take the time to be ready with that answer, and enlist your loved ones to amplify that message through their networks.PreparingIs your mom an excellent proofreader or your cousin a top-notch negotiator? Put their skills to use when polishing a resume or trying to ask for a better compensation package. And your spouse may find it amusing to fire odd questions at you while doing the dishes in order to sharpen your ability to think on your feet and impress a hiring manager.Dont overlook the potential value of teens to your search, too. They likely will be happy to shop with you for a new interview outfit (and give their honest opi nion), and their ease with technology could help you navigate opportunities on social media or become comfortable using Skype for a video interview.Assisting on the Home FrontSearching for a new position is like a job in and of itself, so dont be surprised to experience difficulty getting everything done. Accept your brothers offer to pick the kids up from school or your husbands suggestion to order pizza after a long day.Theres also nothing wrong with (gasp) asking for help. Finding a suitable job benefits the whole family, so its perfectly reasonable to request that the kids make their own lunches or perform some yard work to free up time for you to search. Youll make them feel like a valuable member of a team. And as an added plus, youll probably be much more pleasant to be around when you arent so stressed from tackling everything yourself.Lifting SpiritsFinally, your familys greatest gift can be their presence. Growing Up Digital Redesigning Workplace Training for #8216;Generation Connected#8217;

Growing Up Digital Redesigning Workplace Training for 8216Generation Connected8217 By 2020, Generation Connected or Gen. C, comprised of both millennials and Generation Z, will constitutethe largestsingle group of consumers worldwide. The pervasiveness of Gen. C will also extend to the workforce, with millennials representing46 percentof the entire U.S. workforce by 2020. Over the next five years, Gen. Csneed for digital connection, collaboration, and on-the-job flexibility will disrupt the workforce in ways no other generation has before driving new demand forprogressive training and active learning models that more closely align with this generations digital-first habits.Inpreparation for meeting this generations demands in the near future and effectively competing to recruit and retain top Gen. C talent where should training leaders start? Moving forward, think about how you can incorporate m ore mobile technology into your organizations workstyle. For training leaders, exploring mobile, remote training solutions that power more digital-first training programs is a good place to start.You wont be alone in exploring these options. More businesses are starting to realize the value of complementing traditional training methods with digital learning models to appeal to future generations, especially through the use of online learning. Estimates frominternational Industry Analystspredict a 13 percent annual increase in the corporate remote training market over the next two years. This growth should come as no surpriseas more businesses continue to realize the need for Gen. C to learn in a flexible, individualized way thats most native to their educational habits, preferences, and needs.Not only does digital learning help support Gen. Cs behavioral learning style, but well-designed online training programs can also stimulate higher productivityand engagement across multiple ge nerations. To empower both Gen. C and your entire workforce in a digital learning environment, here are three approaches for building a dynamic remote training program.1. Offer Flexible Work and Learning OptionsStarting with the demand for a flexible work structure that allows Gen. C tomaintain a healthy work-life balance, flexibility in every aspect of the workplace is key forrecruiting and retaining Gen. C employees. Thanks to the convenience and connectivity that mobile device usage provides todays employees, its only natural that Gen. C scoffs at the idea of a traditional nine-to-five work schedule where theyre expected to work productively at their desks all day. Gen. Cs demand for a flexible work environment is almost a non-negotiable work benefit, which makes it imperative for organizations to power on-the-go, mobile work solutions that allow employees to work productively anytime, anywhere.Naturally, Gen. Cs desire to work flexibly also extends to how they like to learn, pre senting training leaders with an opportunity to create online flex-classes that give employees flex-attendance options to join classes in-person or online throughout the duration of a training program. While flex-classes widely appeal to Gen. C, its also important to complement virtual training with traditional training methods that appeal across all generations in the workplace, like face-to-face interaction and peer-to-peer mentorship, both of which can be achieved through live video conferencing.2. Give Employees Their Choice of TechnologyIn offeringflexible online training options to Gen. C, employers should let employees use the technology they know and love to powerremote training.Seventy-eight percentof Gen. Cs millennial cohort report that access to the technology they love and trust makes them more effective at work.Giving Gen. C a say in the devices they use to power remote training makes it easier to keep them more engaged and productive because theyre using technology th ats most conducive to fueling their daily digital activity.Furthermore, personal device use throughout remote training programs is essential forfostering communication, collaboration, and employees masteries of concepts, especially whenusing a second screen to support training concepts.In addition to encouraging employees to use preferred technology to power on-the-go learning, business leaders should consider leveraging similar platforms that Gen. C uses for personal entertainment to power training programs, especially live video. Dubbed as the YouTube Generation, millennials and Gen. Z-ers excessively consume online video, with66 percentof themspending the same amount of time or more watching online videos as they do watching TV. Video is an essential digital training medium that should be used to reach this generation. Some businesses are already getting ahead in meeting Gen. Cs need for video to drive both training and remote work strategies.APolycom and Redshift Research surv eyshows that video conferencing has become a business communication standard, with 76 percent of respondents claiming they currently use video solutions at work.However, while organizations are using more effective mediums of training, like live video, there is a huge disconnect when it comes to offering employees mobile training solutions. Currently, only18 percent of corporate training is accessible on mobile devices, which is a huge missed opportunity for training leaders to effectively reach and engage the mobile-first Gen. C in a way thats most native to their digital learning habits.With the traditional work schedule evolving for many organizations, employers must provide a way to keep employees connected to the company while teaching and keeping them up to speed on required skills, no matter where or when they are working. Allowing personal device use and providing access to video-powered technology are proving helpful in creating more engaging online learning environments.3. Let Workers Experiment and Learn From Each OtherProviding and encouraging the use of accessible and convenient technology during online training programs is just one part of creating a successful remote trainingprogram. Its also equally important to give employees the time needed to practice what theyve learned, as they learn it with mentors and peers.To support Gen. Cs need for peer-to-peer collaboration and its desire tolearn by discovery rather than being told, take a page from educators and flip the classroom. Flipped training is a model that allows employees to review training lessons on their own time through a remote training platform and use scheduled in-person training time to apply what theyve learned and work with peers.By giving employees the opportunity to learn training material on their own time, businesses can use face-to-face training time for simulations or QA sessions, instead of one-way lectures where employees take notes but dont get to practice skills. Collabo rating, demonstrating, and practicing concepts learned in remote training environments with coworkers during in-person training time exposes employees to a mix of digital and hands-on learning that they traditionally wouldnt get.Releasing learning from the constraints of traditional training methods in-person sessions organized by subject matter will allow Gen. C employees to easily access digital resources and learn at their own pace,when and where they want. As businesses evolve their workplace training models to cater to their employees, its important to keep generational concerns top of mind.How are you redesigning the workplace to better meet Gen. Cs needs? The time to start is now.

How Long You Have to Work to Collect Unemployment

How Long You Have to Work to Collect UnemploymentHow Long You Have to Work to Collect UnemploymentNo one wants to find themselves on the unemployment line, even if that line is now mostly virtual. Its especially painful to wind up unemployed shortly after starting a new job, whether you left your last gig voluntarily or have been the victim of multiple layoffs. The emotional fallout can take some time to process, but your first priority, as a newly unemployed person, is to make a plan to survive financially until you secure your next position. Among other things, that means figuring out if youre eligible for unemployment insurance. How Long You Have to Work to Collect Unemployment Every state has its own rules on unemployment, including how long you can receive unemployment compensation and how much money youll get. Generally speaking, though, to be eligible for unemployment, you need To have lost your job through no fault of your own. It usually means that you wont be eligible i f youre fired or quit but not always. For example, sometimes workers are fired because theyre not a good fit, not because they were terminated for cause. If thats the case for you, you might still be eligible for unemployment. The same goes for some workers who quit because of reasons that make it nearly impossible not to quit, such as unsafe work conditions or lack of payment. (Note that a lot of very good reasons for quitting, such as having a sort of lousy boss, hating your job, and/or being bored at work do not qualify as good cause here.) To have been employed for the minimum amount of time required by your state, and worked the required number of hours per week and/or earned the minimum required compensation. State Rules for Unemployment Eligibility That last point is where it gets tricky because each state determines its own rules for unemployment eligibility. For example, unterstellung are Alabamas rules for unemployment eligibility, as of late 2015 You must have wages in at least two quarters of your qualifying period (base period). The base period is the first four quarters (12 months) of the last five completed quarters from the date your claim is filed. For example, if your claim was filed effective October 5, 2002 your base period would the 12 month period beginning July 1, 2001 and ending June 30, 2002. The total of your base period earnings must equal or exceed one and one-half times your highest quarter earnings. The average of your two highest quarters must equal or exceed $1157.01. Most other states have similar formulas to determine eligibility. To find out what your state requires, contact your state unemployment office. Dont Assume Youre Not Eligible for Benefits The good news is that the requirements generally arent set up to exclude people who joined a company shortly before a mass layoff or lost their job because it was a bad fit. In many states, if youve worked at some point during the last year, over the required number of qu arters, youll be eligible for unemployment assistance. So, dont assume that because you barely had time to warm up your office chair and figure out where the coffee was made, that youre automatically excluded from getting help. In fact, thats a good takeaway for all things related to unemployment it never hurts to try for unemployment compensation. You might be surprised to discover that you qualify. Furthermore, while the Unemployment Office has a reputation for being a typically faceless government bureaucracy, there are (at least some) people there who want to help. The bottom line is that when youre unemployed, you owe it to yourself to explore every avenue to give yourself some financial security while you make your next move. Youll feel more secure if youre less worried about money, and its easier to make good career decisions when youre not obsessing over paying your bills.
